Emerging from Montreal’s Peer Pressure party crew, Matt Morien (aka DJ Hatchmatik) is a well-known DJ and producer in the Montreal scene. Initially a B-boy turned professional dance and visual artist, the success of Peer Pressure has led to Morien’s focus on music full-time. As Peer Pressure parties have grown in size and reputation, Hatchmatik has drawn strong media attention and a slew of remixes for artists such as Thunderheist, MIA, Adam Kesher, and Chromeo. In 2009, Hatchmatik was selected to URB magazine’s 100 list.

Check him out rocking the main stage this Sunday October 3rd at 16:00 for Pop @ Piknic, the last one of the season.

Read on for his Q&A:

State your name:

Hatchmagic Morein

How did you get into this?

Altho I was a bedroom DJ for many years before - the first Peer Pressure party in 2005 was really the first time I felt the JUMANJI PASTE boil over and from then on I've been hooked.

What’s your ideal setup to rock a crowd?

Open minds and jazzy toes

What do you usually bring to a picnic?

A pretty girl, a bottle of wine, and a sharpened sense of scrimaldi

What’s the first song that made you go crazy?

Young Dro – “Shoulder Lean” (Krames Refix) - The #1 anthem of all of the early Peer Pressure parties.

What’s the last song that made you go crazy?

Cleo & Patra – “Walk Like An Egyptian”

What song will you never drop?

I'm having trouble thinking of one song people ask for that I won't drop - generally speaking I only have music that I actually like and I am into a lot of guilty pleasure type pop stuff

Funniest request you’ve ever gotten?

"Hey man I respect what you do as a DJ and everything but can you put on the next song? Don't just cut that shit tho - transition it smoothly into the next song..."

WTF????

Most memorable DJ experience?

Nuit Blanche Montréal Fév 2010 - played two massive shows - the first being outside in the vieux-port to over 3,000 people - then to a packed metropolis crowd. Just great to play for so many people TWICE even! in my home town - a truly inspiring night

Biggest fail of your career?

Not pushing harder

I say Piknic, you say...

I'm ready.
