THE BASS PIKNIC REVIEW
Despite the few scattered showers in the early afternoon that hinted at a rainy day, last Sunday was another bright and sunny Piknic. For those who looked out their window and called it quits too early, here's what you missed out on this delightful Father's Day.

NOYL set things off at 2pm with a three hour set that ranged from breakbeat to electro as he smoothly made his way through a strong selection of dancefloor anthems from the past two years. Although he didn't focus much on scratching or juggling, NOYL's ease on the decks made it clear that deep down, he is a disciple of hip hop and the DMC circuits.

In the meantime, the STM stage was undergoing the incomparable and inevitably intense collective experience that we know as drum n bass. Local team Beat Concierge, made up of Golgo 13, Generic, and Qubic.MC kept things at 160 BPM and up throughout the afternoon as they delivered the goods to a steady crowd of 50 to 100 seasoned dnb heads. Some were there to gyrate and others just to sit on the grass and chill but the contrast between the peaceful location and the sonic assaults made it quite a sight. At one point, Qubic left the mic to enjoy a few drinks and one of the Piknic security team members took over for a few minutes, later telling me that it had always been "one of his dreams" to rap on the microphone in front of crowd.

Back on the main stage, Nu Ravers on the Block took over from NOYL for the next three hours. Their steady ascension as one of Canada's best dancefloor exports was justified here as they gave the crowd one of the best sets delivered thus far in the season. Being the only act in the lineup not associated to drum n bass or breakbeat, NROTB provided a welcomed contrast by bringing down the BPMs and finishing their set with the Fake Blood remix of Mike Slott's "Animal"- without a doubt an instant Piknic anthem.

When NROTB and Beat Concierge entered the last minutes of their sets, everybody congregated to the Calder and a big truck pulled up behind the stage to load in boxes and crates of equipment. Yes, this meant Dirtyphonics was in the house! Or the park I should say...From the moment they got on stage at 8pm until they were politely told to finish up at 9:30pm (going 30 minutes over), those unassuming French fellas did nothing but drop heavy bombs. At this point, the several hundred people still in attendance all crowded under the Calder and within the first song, everybody was converted. MC Youthstar was bouncing around all over the stage and maintained everybody's attention until the very last minute of their set, leaving the crowd with a 5-minute track that might as well been called Hiroshima.

Not your average Piknic.

THIS WEEK: JUNE 27th PIKNIC
This week we've assembled a line-up for those lovers of techno, house and umm... tech-house. Local Fu Ancko, a stylistic jack-of-all-trades, gets the afternoon underway, followed by Greg Pidc**k, who still won't tell us what those two missing letters in his name stand for. It all ramps up for one of the true legends of the early-90s Chicago acid-house scene, Green Velvet. So, this is a call-out to all those dancers who like it raw. Hard, and squelchy: the time has come to congregate under The Calder.
