Q&A with Ghostbeard
Previously known as W.I.G, The Notorious W.I.G, and various other monikers throughout the years, 2007 saw the latest and hopefully last rebranding of one Jeff Wayne into the man called Ghostbeard. Despite basing a name around facial hair, which guarantees that he can no longer shave, he has no regrets. When not DJing around Montreal, Waye runs the North American offices of seminal label Ninja Tune, meaning that he’s always got the latest and best tunes at his disposal, ready to hit the turntables.
Ghostbeard is kicking off the Ninja Tune Piknic this Saturday September 4th at 14h00.
Come early to catch his set and read on for his Q&A, one of the funniest thus far:
State your name:
Jeff Waye aka Ghostbeard
How did you get into this?
Despite having an impeccable sense of rhythm I look like an idiot when attempting to dance. I figured DJ'ing would be a much better way to pick up girls... alas I met a lot of dudes.
What’s your ideal setup to rock a crowd?
2 turntables and a microphone... old school like that... and a shit-load of beer... and a portable toilet behind stage... which Piknic still denies me!
What do you usually bring to a picnic?
My bad self... and some records... and hot sauce...definitely hot sauce.
What’s the first song that made you go crazy?
When I was really young my uncle gave me a 7" copy of Nicky Thomas "Love Of The Common People" which I played to death and which pretty much cemented my love for Jamaican music for life.
What’s the last song that made you go crazy?
That one about the dogs... and they're being let out or something... although that one made me go crazy in a whole different way... I found a Thai funk version of I Feel Good last month which is pretty blazing though.
What song will you never drop?
Anything by Lady Gaga... people need to get over that shit... seriously... go fucking listen to Grace Jones.
Funniest request you’ve ever gotten?
They're all funny... because I never play them. You can listen to your request when you get home.
Most memorable DJ experience?
DJ'ing for four hours at private end of tour Massive Attack party. Horace Andy on the dance-floor taking about 3 minutes into the song to realize I was playing Skylarking.
Biggest fail of your career?
DJ'ing a friends wedding...Canadiens goalie legend Ken Dryden requesting “The Twist” and not having a copy...dude won how many Stanley Cups and Vezina trophies...I can't even play him “The Twist”...bullshit. Note that Ken Dryden is one of the few people I'd ever play a request for. I'm waiting for the day Guy Lafleur requests a track off his disco album...cause I'm armed with that shit... English & French version!
I say Piknic, you say...
Hangover!!!
