Q&A with Terrence Kissner

Terence_kissner

Dividing his time between Tokyo and Toronto, Terence Kissner has been part of the Canadian invasion that has permeated the hearts of the international dance community. Between landing residencies at some of Tokyo's most coveted nightclubs and touring Japan on numerous occasions, he continues to make his mark both in front of the turntables, and behind the scenes working as a DJ, promoter and graphic designer with Toronto’s AFE SOCIETY events and clothing brand. His most recent endeavours find him in the studio with his production partner Brian Johnson, working on music under the moniker DUGDIG, as well as his own solo project.

Catch him on the main stage this Sunday, October 3rd at 14:00 for the last Piknic of the season.

And get to know him better with this Q&A.

State your name:
Terence Kissner

How did you get into this?

I grew up in Kitchener and went to high school with Mike Shannon, Scott Monteith (Deadbeat), Jay Hunsburger and more. We all went to raves in the early 90's together and started DJing around the same time. We had very competitive house parties.

What’s your ideal setup to rock a crowd?

2 Technics 1200mk3, 2 Pioneer CDJ 1000, Pioneer DJM800 or Allen & Heath xone:92 mixer, Traktor Scratch, my MacBook & a Faderfox DX2

What do you usually bring to a picnic?

Good company, wine and a blanket

What’s the first song that made you go crazy?

Prokofiev's “Peter and the Wolf”...the sound of the wolf used to scare the s#&t out of me. I loved it!

What’s the last song that made you go crazy?

“I-73 Night” by Alex Smoke.

What song will you never drop?

Anything Country

Funniest request you’ve ever gotten?

To play anything Country

Most memorable DJ experience?

DJing a free outdoor party in Tokyo at Yoyogi Park during the cherry blossom festival. The park was packed with reveling Japanese on holiday, wearing costumes, playing games and drinking with abandon. The sun was already setting by the time it was my turn to take the decks. People surrounded me on all sides, dancing vigorously to the sounds emanating from the speaker stacks. Petals from the cherry blossoms were falling gently onto the crowd like giant snowflakes. It was perfect!

Biggest fail of your career?

Not making music sooner. So much to learn and I'm not getting younger.

I say Piknic, you say...

Please be dry!
